Abstract:
This study indicated that accurate correction of astigmatism is possible down to +/- 0.5 Dioptre. This is an important element in achieving better vision from cataract surgery.
Purpose: Assess efficacy of correction of corneal astigmatism in range 0.6 to 0.9 Dioptre using Alcon Acrysof T2 IOL
Setting: FOCUS (Sydney Eye Specialist Centre), Australia. Private ophthalmology clinic and day surgery
Methods: 102 eyes Pre-op corneal astigmatism assessed with IOLmaster and Orbscan, 0.6 to 0.9 Dioptre cylinder corrected by implantation of T2 IOL. Refractive astigmatism assessed at 1 month or more post-op
Results: Of 102 eyes 98 had less cyl than pre-op 95 had 0.5 Dioptre or less 89 had 0.25 or less
Conclusions: It is worthwhile correcting low corneal astigmatism, 0.6 to 0.9 with the Acrysof T2 IOL. The few cases where refractive cylinder was increased or not reduced reflect limitations of our ability to measure whole eye astigmatism with current instruments.
